We’re giving away three pairs of Zamberlan Steep GT boots, so we figured it made sense to get a pair in for review as well. They arrived this morning and here’s what we make of them so far.

Zamberlan is one of the classic boot brands and have been making boots since 1929, so should know a thing or two about outdoors footwear. After a quiet few years in the UK, the brand’s upping its game for 2010 with improved distribution and new models.

The Steep GT is a contemporary-looking mountain walking boot with uppers made from an interesting combination of Hydrobloc-treated suede leather and nubuck. Inside there’s a Gore-Tex liner for waterproofing.

The boots look chunkier than they feel, our test boots weigh just over 1500g for a pair of size 43s, and combine good torsional ridigity with a fair bit of lengthways flex for comfortable walking. Underfoot there’s a reassuring Vibram Star Trek sole unit – beam me up Luigi – and EVA cushioning for a comfortable ride.

There’s a fair bit of internal padding giving an instantly comfortable feel and fit is snug for the size, with a good heel cup. The last is narrower than most UK boots, so if you find yourself swimming around in, say, Scarpa or Brasher boots, then these are definitely worth adding to your list to try.

It’s early days, but the Steep GT feels like a good compromise between protection, comfort and lightness. It also has a reassuringly quality feel to it, though we’re not sure how the nubuck and suede upper will stand up to scree-style rock abrasion – there’s no rand or toe protection cap.

Retail price is 155 and the boot is also available in a women’s version. Full review to follow after we’ve used them properly.
