An enflamed heating unit caused the evacuation of a receiving building at L.L. Bean’s facilities on Double L Street, during a fire call at 12:36 p.m. on Thursday.

Deputy Chief Ray Smith said about 13 Freeport firefighters and engines from Pownal and Yarmouth responded to a call reporting smoke in the first floor of the building.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes of the call, by which time employees had evacuated the building and extinguished flames coming from a ceiling-mounted heating unit.

Smith said the motor inside the heating unit malfunctioned and ignited the fire, which caused substantial smoke but no damage.

Employees returned to the building within 30 minutes of the call, after firefighters checked the power source for heater, Smith said.
