While snowboard sales were looking strong through October, November delivered a harsh blow on the sales front with overall equipment sales for the month falling off nearly 17 percent in dollars compared to 2008, bringing the season total down 7 percent in units and 8 percent in dollars according to SIA.
Although sales of snow equipment were actually up by one percent in units through October, warmer than average temperatures during November along with early season sales took their toll. There was some positive news however with Internet sales jumping 19 percent in units and 21 percent in dollars, and the channel accounted for 20 percent of all hardgoods sales. Additionally, anecdotal reports show that December sales have shown a solid rebound over last year due to strong holiday spending and above average snowfalls around the country.
Keeping those rosy glasses on, inventory positions have declined over last year as carryover product gets pushed through the pipe, which should translate to higher margins on scarce, in-season gear. Overall inventory levels dropped 5 percent in units and 3 percent in dollars over last year.
